My Kid's Homework is Hell for the Entire Family | Family Drama
Ok, it was a long, long, time ago since I was in third grade but there is no way I was doing as much homework as my son is bringing home. You would think the kid was in high school. I feel like our children are turning into miniature adults, and by the time he gets to 13 he’ll be running around like Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties (that's how old I am!). Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for preparing our children for the “real world,” but what’s happening is my son gets tired and when we continue to push him as it gets later in the night, it ends up turning into one big family fight. We win, of course, but it comes at a cost.
Our son is gifted in some subjects, but everything doesn’t come easy. I would say he’s a typical kid. Plus, thank God, my wife is a former school teacher because if you’ve watched the show, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, I realized in some subjects like math and remembering how to do fractions, I’m actually dumber than a 3rd grader. However, despite a hit on my self-esteem, the non-stop homework seems to be an issue.
We’ve talked to other parents who feel the same way. Are we just being babies or has it really changed that much since we were in school? I would love to hear from some teachers on the issue who must be working overdrive to grade all that homework. My son or our family has no choice. Failure isn’t an option but his stress during the week is almost as much as mine. Not the way I remember my life at 9 years old.
