I was eager to write an amazing HeadDrama article this week; something epic, unprecedented in the realm of the website. But as I sat here, staring at my computer screen all I could draw was blanks.
Then I realized I'd been hit with writer's block, which not only was giving me head drama, but plagues the minds of even the most brilliant writers. So now I'm supposed to tell you a bunch of spiffy expert tips on how to lift the wall blocking your pool of infinite ideas. Sorry, but I'm not going to do that. I've taken creative writing courses, playwriting, public speaking, and have written research paper upon research paper. Sometimes the little spider webs of idea that instructors have you do actually work, but I've found another ritual to help me get the creative juices flowing.
1. Move away from your desk!
Ideas come from the life we've lived and the things we've been exposed to. You're not abandoning you week by leaving your desk. An idea can hit you anywhere.
2. Ask for advice
Too much pride never did anyone any good. Go to a family member of someone you confide in and explain your task. Even if they're full of bad ideas, a bad idea can potentially spark a good one.
3. Listen to music
Most music tells stories or emits emotions which can inspire some wonderful ideas. Pop in some headphones and sit with the music and your thoughts.
4. Flow of ideas list
Grab a piece of paper and write down anything that comes to mind. Don't hold back. Even the most ridiculous thoughts can lead to a genius idea. This is actually a tip I learned in my creative writing class, but hey, it works!
5. Don't be hard on yourself
Everyone gets writers block. Obsessing over it will only keep you blocked. Calm down, do some yoga, take a walk and forget about it. Think about it. How many times have you heard an amazing author, inventor, or scientist answer the question "How did you come up with that?" with "It just hit me."
